The Eighth grade science classes will be starting a unit on comprehensive sexual health 4/28 to 5/16. All 8th grade students are required by the State of California to have access to health education as outlined by the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA).
This class will include information on sexual health and HIV prevention. This state law mandates that students receive this important education at least once in junior high and once in high school. In Modesto City Schools, we teach this course in the 8th and 9th grades. While there are specific guidelines for what is to be taught, parents retain the right to decide if they want their child to participate in this curriculum.
What if I do not want my child to participate in this Health course?
In accordance with the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA), parents have the right to opt their children out of this instruction. If you do not want your child to participate in this curriculum, a request can be submitted online by visiting https://laserfiche-app.monet.k12.ca.us/Forms/HealthCurriculumOptOut
Please note that this is an opt-out process, not an opt-in, so no action is required on your part unless you choose to withdraw your child from the curriculum.
